Our History
We first opened our doors in 1980 as a joint project between Beaver County and the Tofield and Viking hospitals. Previously, the responsibility for ambulance service was coordinated by each of the hospitals individually, and staffed by nurses who were driven to emergency calls by ambulance drivers. In 1981 Beaver Emergency Medical Services was incorporated as Beaver Ambulance Society and would become a federally registered charity a decade later.
By the mid 1980's the first Registered Emergency Medical Technicians were trained and employed by the service. In 1990 our first Advanced Life Support ambulance was launched with the arrival of our Paramedic manager. By the turn of the millennium both of our stations would be staffed with Advanced Care Paramedics and Primary Care Paramedics.
In 2009, as a result of direction from the provincial government, Alberta Health Services took over governance and funding for emergency medical services in the Province of Alberta. Beaver Emergency Medical Services entered into a contractual agreement with Alberta Health Service to continue providing emergency medical services.
